What Do I Look for In a Dog Bed?
There are a few things to look for when looking at the vast array of dog beds. In this case,
size is important, without a doubt the most essential aspect to look at when purchasing a dog
bed for your pet. While most people will realize the obvious problem with getting a bed that
is too small for their dog, you also do not want to get one that is too big. For your dog to
‘take’ to his or her new dog bed, a canine will feel safest and securest when he or she can curl
up in the bed, much like we humans like to curl up in our blankets like a mummy.
Some dog beds are designed for outdoor use, so if your dog sleeps in a doghouse, you need to
have a bed that is water proof and mildew resistant. These covers are usually made of strong
nylon material which can be removed and washed when necessary. It is wise to purchase a dog
bed that has a removable cover, so that it can be washed in the washing machine. Covers are
usually made from fabrics such as cotton or nylon, though blended fabrics are usually stronger
and more durable. If your dog is restless and has a tendency to chew or claw his or her bed,
look for a dog bed with a thick cover. Some beds come with double covers, which are preferable
for rambunctious dogs who like to bite and chew. If this describes your pet, make sure you get
a dog bed which has synthetic fiber padding, as this type of padding will not get all over the
house if your dog chews through the cover.
One last reminder when choosing a dog bed; assuming you are looking for one with a removable,
washable cover, make sure any zippers are inaccessible to your dog. Not only can the metal be
harmful to your dog’s teeth and be a problem if swallowed, but the zipper gives the animal a
ready-made starting point to rip the bed apart!
