Not Just for Burying, Dog Bones Can Help Avoid a Trip to the Doggy Dentist
For generations, pet owners have been using dog bones as dog treats
for their four-legged friends. In the past, this has meant a
visit to the local butcher shop, where the leftover bones were
available for a very reasonable price, but with the emphasis
on dog health over the past number of years, most manufacturers
of dog supplies now make a wide range of synthetic dog bones.
There is one major benefit to synthetic dog bones over real ones.
The manufactured bones, usually made of nylon, are an essential part
of dog care, in that they act like a toothbrush while being chewed.
This scraping action helps to remove tartar and other build-ups off
the animal’s teeth and gums, reducing the risk of dental problems and
the resulting expensive vet visit. Try to pick a dog bone that is ridged,
or has bristles, as this creates a flossing action, and a flavored one will
entice your pet to make good use of it.
Most butcher shops will provide boiled, baked or smoked real dog bones,
once all usable meat has been removed, and these will provide a tasty
treat that your pet will love. The benefit to this is that the butcher
hopefully knows which bones will be most suitable for your dog, ones that
will not splinter and cause potential digestive troubles. While these real
bones provide little or no benefit to the animal’s health, they will keep
Rover occupied for hours, though you should never leave your pet unattended
with one, and discard when it becomes worn.
