Get Rid of that Guilty Feeling, With the Installation of a Dog Door
Do you get that guilty feeling every morning as you head off to work
and leave your pet at home alone for the day? The end to this guilt
may be as simple as installing a dog door for your pet. While you
may be free to come and go as you please during your day, your dog does
not have the same privilege, and is stuck either inside or outside for
the day. With a dog door available to allow access for your pet to exit
and enter the house at his leisure you can forget your guilt and have a
productive day, until the time comes when you get to return home to your
wonderful pet.
Safety is the first issue to think about when installing a dog door,
and the first step is to ensure the correct measurements, so the animal
does not get stuck. The shoulders are usually the tallest and widest part
of a dog, so measure the height and width of your pet at his shoulders, and
add about two inches to each. If possible, cut a hole that size into a
large piece of cardboard, and make sure Rover will fit through it, and that
it does not hit his back or rump. Of course, this will be when the animal
is full-grown, and you may want to make allowances for the animal to get a
little fatter!
For an older pet, or maybe just a spoiled one, you can actually get a dog
door that is remote controlled! With a transmitter that goes on the animal’s
collar, the door will open when the transmitter, and therefore the dog, is
within a certain range, and close again when the radio wave goes out of range.
Like an automatic garage door opener, the electronics will identify when an
object is blocking the door, and it will remain open until the passage is clear,
so the door will not be shutting on the poor dog!
