Show Who is in Control with a Proper Dog Leash
One of the first items to purchase when bringing home your new pet is the proper
dog leash. Whether being used for walking or training, it is essential that you
maintain control over the animal at all times, mostly for the safety of your pet,
but also out of courtesy and respect for others. While there are a number of
different dog leashes on the market, they essentially all provide the same benefits,
so with little research you can decide which dog leash best suits the needs of you
and your pet.
Before buying a dog leash, make sure it is strong enough to maintain control over
your dog. Most of the one-piece, nylon or webbed-cotton leashes are ideal, as they
are extremely strong, while still being easy to wash, quick drying, easy on the hands,
and come in many colors to match other dog collars. Leather is another option, and
while these are strong and durable, they are more expensive and do not dry out well,
if your dog likes the water, or is walked in a rainy climate.
A retractable dog leash is yet another option. This type of lead is extendable,
and allows your dog the freedom to roam, within reason, and may help put an end to
your constant stop and start walks. A spring action controls the length of the lead,
so as your dog walks ahead a braking system allows you to stop the dog, or lock the
leash at a certain length. If the dog stops, as you near him, the lead automatically
rewinds inside the holder. Retractable leads are good in areas where there is room
for the dog to roam, such as a park, but not as good when you may need sudden control
over the animal, such as a city street.
