Are We Harming Our Pets with Dog Treats?
While dog treats may be appetizing and enjoyable to our pets, we must remember that they
are sometimes very rich in calories and protein. Humans and dogs do not share the same
nutritional needs. A high quality dog food will provide all the nutritional balance that a
dog needs, so we should never have to add to our pets’ meals with biscuits or dog treats,
and should NEVER give an animal vitamins or supplements meant for humans.
While dogs don’t need the same variation in their diets that we require, that doesn’t mean
some dog treats every once in a while will hurt. Like most enjoyable things in life, the
trick is to give these dog biscuits and other treats in moderation. While there is nothing
wrong with rewarding your pet for good behavior, giving treats should not become habitual.
Treats should not be used to console your pet, such as when you are about to leave him for
the day. A dog toy will make your buddy just as happy, and last a whole lot longer, so you
don’t have to leave the house with that guilty feeling.
While dogs will generally prefer dog treats that contain or taste like meat, real bones are
not the best choice, and can cause problems for your pet. Slivers of bone can get caught in
the teeth or throat, and may even make it through to the stomach and intestine. There are so
many dog treats on the market that your dog will love, don’t take the chance with real bones.
When shopping for dog biscuits and other treats, avoid the ones that contain artificial colors,
as they will stain the enamel of the teeth. Always follow the manufacturers’ guidelines for how
much to allow each day, and don’t go overboard, as these treats may contain vitamins that are
harmful in large amounts, not to mention harmful to the waistline. Most importantly, remember
that no treat can take the place of attention and affection, and those don’t have to be in
moderation!
