Halloween Costumes for Dogs
Not all dogs will be very cooperative about being put in a costume for Halloween, though
some dogs really do enjoy wearing clothes. Some dogs will love the attention that goes with
being dressed up and seem to think it is a perfectly natural thing to do. Other dogs will
only cooperate if a costume is not terribly annoying to them. For some, a costume might be
fine, but anything that resembles a hat will have to go. If your dog gets nervous and upset,
and just doesn't like the idea of being dressed up, it is best to forget the costume idea.
Try a cute Halloween print bandana or dog collar instead.
The most reasonably priced and easiest to wear Halloween dog costumes have a headpiece of
some kind, plus a cape or some type of collar or ruffle. These include the popular witch
and devil costumes, plus clowns, angels and more. A clever new bib type dog costume, with
sleeves, gives the illusion that the dog is standing upright. They are available in many
fashions, including pirates, bumblebees, cheerleaders, biker dogs and many other delightful
characters. Another costume style, which basically fits like a jacket or vest, will transform
your dog into a hot dog, a skeleton, a Hawaiian party animal and more. Costumes like these are
made to stay in place, fit comfortably, and allow a dog free movement.
There are some things to keep in mind to ensure your pet is safe and sound in his new dog
costume. When wearing the outfit, can the dog see and breathe easily? A costume should
not interfere with the dog’s vision, hearing or breathing, and should never include a mask.
Check the fit around the dog’s neck to make sure it is not too tight; like his dog collar,
you should be able to easily fit three fingers between the costume and the dog’s neck.
After the costume is on, watch for chewing, pawing, or signs of discomfort.
If you are making your pet a costume, use a fabric that won't cause the dog to become over
heated. Do not use old fur jackets, for example, since most dogs are already wearing a fur
coat. Don't put any beads, loose dangling accessories or other small objects on a costume,
since they could be chewed and swallowed and become a choking hazard. A costume should not
drag on the floor, so make sure that your dog can walk without stepping on it. Following
these simple rules will let your dog participate in the fun of Halloween night, and ensure
it is a good time for the entire family!
